The Centre for Biomedical Genetics (CBG) is a consortium of 16 research groups in the life sciences, the largest combination in the Netherlands. The group leaders were selected from 6 research institutes associated with 4 universities located in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leiden and Utrecht, based on the quality of their research and commitment to the theme. The participants combine a wide range of expertise that includes genetics, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and structural biology. Most groups operate within the setting of a university or specialized hospital, which facilitates transfer of knowledge to the clinic.
The founding of the CBG is the result of a new incentive announced in 1997 by the minister of Education, Culture and Science aiming to promote quality and collaboration in Dutch research by providing a limited number of high quality research consortia with additional funding. The CBG was formally established in 1998. Following a thorough selection procedure under the auspices of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the CBG was selected as the only consortium in the life sciences amenable for funding, initially for a 5-year period starting 1999. After a positive evaluation by an international review committee, funding was extended for the period 2004-2008. On March 9 2006, the minister of Education, Culture and Science announced that funding would be continued for the period 2009-2013.
